Ironman Bike Rules Made Simple: A Visual Guide

Most athletes think they understand the bike course rules for Ironman.

I mean, just don’t draft and you’re ok.

Right?…

In reality, it’s a bit more nuanced than that, and if you haven’t read the Athlete Guide or Rulebook lately (*cough, cough) you might not realize that a simple positioning mistake can cost you a time penalty, or potentially lead to a disqualification.

Don’t panic. You don’t need to memorize a 40-page document tonight.

I’m more of a visual learner, so I made a video to help explain triathlon bike course rules. And if you don’t race Ironman, that’s ok. You still need to know these rules for non-draft legal USAT triathlon as well (*time penalties may vary based on race distance.)

In the video below, we cover drafting, passing, penalties, and race-day etiquette- broken down visually so you can actually understand it.

So grab your pencil, and let’s go to Triathlon University!

Note: For Ironman specifically, a yellow card is currently :30-:60.
